Permaculture
|
ikondwe Freedom Gardens was established on the 1st of May 1982 by Glyvyns Chinkhuntha and his wife Christine Chinkhuntha, who were given a 10 square meters piece of land by the Chief in Dowa, central Malawi. Their aim was to achieve food sovereignity, economic welfare and improving nutrition of their family and those around them. They adopted permaculture and used minimal or nil inputs from outside. Using integrated soil and water conservation practises and using locally available plants for pest control, this farm has been able to expand and grow several crops including fruits, vegetables, herbs, legumes and cereals. He was conferred an honorary Doctorate for his work by the then Bunda College of Agriculture a constituent college of the University of Malawi, which is now Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). Currently, Daniel Chinkhuntha, son of late Glyvyns Chinkhuntha runs the farm, which has since grown to several hectares. The farm provides training for farmers and academics in permaculture, training for women in food processing and catering as well as provides accommodation, camping facilities and meals to volunteers, tourists and researchers.
